Description

Founded in 1968, Concern Worldwide is an international, non-governmental humanitarian organization dedicated to reducing extreme poverty in 23 countries. Concern targets the root causes of extreme poverty through programs in health and nutrition, education, livelihoods, emergencies, climate and environment and gender equality.

Concern’s work in education aims to improve the lives of extremely poor and vulnerable children in a sustainable way by increasing access to quality primary education and supporting child well-being. In addition to supporting boys, girls, teachers, caregivers and communities in both formal and non-formal settings, our programmes also target out of school adolescents to develop the basic skills they need to transition back to formal learning where appropriate.

Concern works in partnership with Ministries of Education and local NGOs, to influence lasting change in the education system at national, district and school levels. Education programs have a holistic approach and focus on three objectives:

  1. Improving access to education: An emphasis is placed on reaching those who have been excluded from education opportunities, such as girls, children living in slums or rural areas, working children, children belonging to minority groups, children affected by HIV and AIDS, and children with disabilities.
  2. Improving quality of education: In order for children to gain the most from their education, our programs focus on ensuring children are able to develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills specifically in the early grades so that in the future they will be able to continue to access learning. Quality of education requires a focus on supporting teachers and the education system through training, coaching and continuous teacher professional development, as well as ensuring teachers and children have access to learning materials.
  3. Improving wellbeing: School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) has increasingly emerged as a barrier to education. SRGBV prevention and response mechanisms are embedded within programs. In addition, Concern provides non-specialized psychosocial support, as well as life skills and adolescent sexual reproductive health support.
