Key Information

The ongoing drought, conflict and instability has resulted in the increase numbers of the internally displaced people throughout Somalia. Over 269,970 people have sought settlement in the 377 IDP camps in Baidoa of Bay region and are in need of immediate emergency responses to enable them to access to basic services. In addition, the humanitarian crisis has prevented the majority of the displaced children from access to safe, inclusive and protective learning environment and quality education. Without an education, young people’s childhood may be lost to child labour, child marriage, recruitment by armed groups or other life-threatening activities. This means that children miss out on vital learning and are deprived of a safe place to be when they are in very traumatic situations. FCA proposed a project, aimed at ensuring inclusive access to quality education for 3,000 boys and girls through inclusive, protective and safe learning environment and quality education; additional 70 adults (Teachers, key staff from MoE, members of the education cluster, and CEC members) will be targeted, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 3,070. The project does address right to education of drought affected displaced and host community boys and girls in primary school age, including children with disabilities and also provides know-how and skills to children, teachers and Community Education Committees (CEC) to enhance drought-affected primary school age children’s wellbeing and resilience. The interventions will target four primary schools including an IDP school through school rehabilitation, training to teachers and children as well as awareness raising towards the CEC. FCA has a very strong presence and established good relationship and trusts with various state and non-state actors in Baidoa and throughout South West State. This will ensure access to targeted schools and drought affected primary school age children of both IDPs and host community. The project’s duration is 1 June 2018 – 30 April 2019. It is funded by EU/ECHO (European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations). Total project budget is 777,778 €, of which ECHO funding is 90% and FCA co-funding 10%.
