Egypt Literate Village

Key Information
Over the last decade, the Government of Egypt has prioritized the reduction of adult illiteracy and provision of high-quality universal primary education to all children through its own efforts as well as successful multilateral partnerships between government, donors, and NGOs. As a result, Egypt has made strides in improving access to education for children and adults. There are still large numbers of illiterate women and children who are out of school, however, particularly in rural Egypt.
The goal of the USAID | Egypt Literate Village project is to ensure that women—especially mothers and primary-school children in targeted villages—have the necessary literacy skills for continuous learning and self-improvement. The Literate Village (LV) Program was launched in 2017 to address these issues and support women in rural Egypt – especially mothers of primary-school children in identified villages—to defy the cultural stigma surrounding women’s education and challenge norms governing women’s role in society. As a partner with Save the Children on the project, World Education leads all activities relating to increasing rural mothers’ ability to contribute to both their own and their children’s education. Literate Village uses an intergenerational approach that engages mothers and their children to eradicate illiteracy in 1,447 economically disadvantaged communities with high rates of maternal illiteracy and low rates of children’s school attendance.
