Key Information
"PROIGUALDAD 2020-2024" is a national program dedicated to advancing gender equity, inclusivity, and the empowerment of women and girls across various sectors. This initiative represents an integral component of the broader national policy on equity, and the 2022-2024 iteration marks its fourth stage of development. PROIGUALDAD serves as a roadmap that facilitates meaningful dialogues between Mexico's women and government institutions, aimed at addressing some of the most pressing concerns and demands of women. Its overarching objective is to ensure the well-being of women and girls while actively working to bridge the gender gaps that can compromise their future. Within the program's strategic framework, several actions are directed towards the realm of education. Among these is Action 3.3.2, which seeks to enhance the content in schools within basic education, specifically focusing on nurturing girls' self-care and autonomy skills. This aligns with the primary objective of PROIGUALDAD, which is to "Enhance the conditions for women, girls, and adolescents to access well-being and health without discrimination, grounded in a rights-based perspective”.
Additionally, a comprehensive curriculum revision is being implemented to eliminate deeply ingrained gender stereotypes. For instance, under "Component 4.2.2," there is a concerted effort to integrate strategies into national education sector plans for basic, primary, and tertiary institutions. These strategies are designed to challenge traditional masculine behaviors rooted in romanticized notions of love, while simultaneously fostering respect and a deep understanding of women's rights to lead a life free from violence (as dlifeetailed on page 89). Furthermore, as part of this curriculum overhaul, the program actively promotes the development of codes of conduct and effective strategies aimed at both preventing and reporting incidents of sexual harassment within tertiary institutions
