Key Information
Impact(Ed) International has supported 461,351 marginalised girls to improve their literacy and numeracy skills, develop their life skills and raise their aspirations. Impact(Ed) International’s approach combined professional development of teachers with video technology and teaching resources. These were used to support learning gains, the completion of primary schooling and the transition to secondary school, and to enable the pursuit of both educational and life goals. By improving the quality of education with government partners and shifting community attitudes and actions to further support girls’ education, the project aimed to positively impact girls (and boys) now and for years to come.
- Ghana: Impact(Ed) International, in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service, reached a total of 800 primary and junior secondary school communities.
- Kenya: Known locally as the Nawiri project, and in partnership with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, Impact(Ed) International reached a total of 514 primary and junior secondary school communities.
- Nigeria: Known locally as the Fitila project, Impact(Ed) International, in partnership with the State Universal Basic Education Board of Kano, reached 609 primary and junior secondary school communities.
Activities:
- Provided sustainable technology, educational video content and teacher professional development to improve the quality and gender-inclusiveness of education at the primary and junior secondary level.
- Conducted primary school leadership and community training to mobilise actions – defined in community action plans – to address barriers to girls’ attendance, learning and transition.
- Provided intensive teacher training and follow-up coaching to improve students’ literacy and numeracy outcomes in primary school while reinforcing child-centred and gender-responsive teaching methods.
- Introduced and rolled out a remedial education programme to support low-performing mid-to-upper primary learners to master foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
- Produced new Impact(Ed) video and open-sourced digital content designed to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes in project schools.
- Provided robust training for club mentors to bring a range of life skills content and support to children in school-based clubs.
- Produced My Better World, a new television and radio life skills series based on themes from CAMFED’s print curriculum to develop students’ knowledge, attitudes and skills as well as to shift parent and community norms in support of gender equality and social inclusion. The series was distributed at school and through national and local television and radio.
