Mozambique Demographic Transition Waala Programme

  • P Project/Program

A Active

Key Information

The Waala programme will support the acceleration of the demographic transition (DT) in Mozambique via: (i) increased access to basic health care; (ii) increased access to family planning (FP); (iii) supporting a reduction in early marriage; and (iv) increased empowerment of young people through access to education and economic opportunities. The first component Strengthening primary health care systems project (PHCSP), aims to improve the use and quality of reproductive, maternal, child and adolescent health and nutrition (RMCAH-N) particularly in underserved areas. The second component, Increase use of modern high-quality family planning methods by women in Mozambique, especially amongst the most vulnerable, aims to increase and sustain financing for family planning services and to strengthen the supply chain and logistics management of contraceptives. The third component, Strengthening Data Systems for Youth Empowerment and the Demographic Dividend in Mozambique, focuses on the generation and analysis of high-quality data generated by the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), Household Budget Surveys, and the National Censuses. The fourth component, Female empowerment: testing innovative approaches to decrease unintended pregnancies and early and forced marriage. This component, jointly with the UK-funded Social Protection programme, aims to demonstrate the impact of leveraging the Government-run child grant programme (which targets vulnerable women and girls) with interventions to prevent unintended pregnancies and early marriage. The project is still in mobilisation stage.
