Key Information

The Equality in Education Team, part of the Scottish Government’s Learning Directorate, engaged with the collective to conduct workshops with the Gender Equality Taskforce in Education and Learning, created in 2020, resulting in a Theory of Change model and accompanying narrative.

This work, published in 2022, supports the Taskforce’s goal of addressing systemic gender inequality in education and learning in Scotland. The ambition is to ensure that all girls and young women, including those facing intersecting inequalities, are taught by gender-aware educators, are free from sexism, harassment, and violence in educational settings, and have unrestricted choices in subjects and areas of study.

The recommendations and findings in this report are cross-checked with efforts by the Children’s Parliament and Scottish Youth Parliament, which have gathered perspectives from children and young people on achieving genuine gender equality in the Scottish education system. The voices of girls and young women are integrated throughout this report alongside our recommendations.
