Key Information
The Girls Rise Up! Project, led by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Solomon Islands in partnership with CARE International. It is supported by Australia through the Pacific Girl program, managed by Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development (Pacific Women). The project aims to develop the confidence, skills and knowledge of at-risk adolescent girls aged 13-18 and to establish supportive peer networks, providing girls with the opportunity to safely advocate on issues that affect them, while engaging service providers to support the needs and priorities of the girls. The project actively includes girls with disabilities.
Rise Up!’s objectives are:
- Young women are leading positive change in their communities.
- Young women are more confident and identify as leaders in their own communities.
- Community members recognise the leadership potential of young women.
- Young women are knowledgeable and skilled, and are sharing information with their peers in the areas of Human Rights, Women’s Rights, Gender, Public Speaking, and Leadership.
These objectives are achieved through training participants in five topics: women’s rights, leadership, public speaking, human rights and gender. Rise Up! has become a widespread grassroots program largely run in rural areas and implemented by young women Peer Educators.
