Key Information

The Job Shadowing Program, launched in May 2023, introduced 40 high school students (30 female, 10 male) from 27 schools across four regions to careers in the energy sector. Facilitated by the Junior Achievement Institute, students interned for 10 days with 10 state-owned and private companies. The program aims to inspire youth, particularly young women, to pursue STEM careers and address gender disparities in the field.

Supported by Eswatini’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy (MNRE), in collaboration with the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, Eswatini Electricity Company, and Ministry of Education and Training, the program equips students with practical workplace skills and professional confidence. Interns gained exposure to office procedures, communication skills, and insights into career pathways.

The initiative serves as a Public-Private Partnership model, promoting gender equality and encouraging broader application across sectors and countries. Based on its initial success, the program will continue with a second cohort expected by the next academic year.

Students expressed a transformative experience, challenging misconceptions about women in STEM and fostering aspirations to bridge gender gaps in the energy sector.
