Description
Greenlight for Girls started with one e-mail sent to around the world with one question: Do you believe there is something we need to do to encourage girls in science? Since our inception in 2010, we have engaged and inspired over 50,000 students working with our growing network of 8,000-plus volunteer role models at over 360 virtual and in-person events worldwide which show the link of STEM to all careers, and to role models and companies for their future.
Our mission is to encourage girls of all ages and backgrounds to consider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) -related careers by introducing them to the world of science in fun and exciting ways. We envision a balanced world where girls (and boys) from any nation and of any age know they have the possibility and choice to enter the world of STEM. We achieve this by holding interactive virtual and in-person educational events of all sizes showing the link of STEM to all careers.
Our overall goal is to contribute to closing the gap between women and men in long-term STEM careers by targeting girls at an age where we can help influence their perception of science and what it means to be a woman in these fields. We do so by working at a local, individual level – our events connect girls to role models in STEM as well as hands-on activities that build their skills so that they feel inspired to see all of their future possibilities. Our g4g engagements have resulted in a positive impact for our youth attendees: in our surveys and assessment, they demonstrate more interest in STEM subjects with 94% specifically mentioning that they will now explore STEM careers because of the g4g event.
