Nyanza Initiative for Girls Education and Empowerment (NIGEE)
- A Advocate
- I Implementer
Description
Nyanza Initiative for Girls Education and Empowerment (NIGEE) was conceived as a one-stop intervention to address teen pregnancy and subsequent school dropout, gender-based violence, FGM in the four counties (Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homabay) of Nyanza region. They implement in these counties because several national surveys have consistently reported the four counties as having some of the worst indicators that impact negatively on adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). For example, the region records the highest teen pregnancy (22.2%), second highest prevalence of female genital mutilation (FGM) (32.4%), lowest age at sexual debut (16.5 years), second lowest age at marriage (18.9 years), and third-highest physical and sexual violence against women and girls (33.5%) (Kenya Demographic Health Survey, 2014).
The latest National HIV Survey (KENPHIA, 2020) also reported that the same counties still have the highest HIV prevalence nationally: 19.6% in Homabay, 17.5% in Kisumu, 15.3% in Siaya and 13% in Migori, compared to 4.9% nationally.
The guiding vision of NIGEE is to localize resource mobilization.
